Kidney disease represents a big change in the diet of the patient and their family. Most of them face numerous doubts, including what foods they can eat and which they should avoid, in what quantities and how to eat correctly in this new stage.

To resolve these doubts and help when facing this complex dietary change, we have the ALCER nutrition service. > Castalia formed by dietitians-nutritionists Noemi Martínez and Javier Vila-Belda, who provide dietary advice in any of the phases of kidney disease (early stages CKD, ACKD, dialysis or transplant) since good nutritional control can delay entry into dialysis, prevent malnutrition in hemodialysis patients, prevent and reverse hyperphosphatemia and hyperkalemia, as well as help in fluid control and avoid excessive interdialysis weight gain.

Through dietary advice, weight loss is also addressed to enter the kidney transplant list and overweight is avoided in transplant patients.

The diets carried out are personalized and nutritional education is crucial for the patient’s involvement in their own treatment, designing varied, appetizing menus adapted to the characteristics of each person (tastes, preferences, schedules, work, etc.). ) and facilitating adherence to new dietary guidelines through periodic follow-ups.

Nutrition care can be provided in person at the ALCER Castalia headquarters, but also by telephone and telematics. The Nutrition service team also travels to dialysis centers to be more accessible to patients, especially those newly admitted.

As new for 2023, a collaboration project has been initiated with the Renal Transplant Unit of the H. General Universitario de Castellón, providing nutrition services to those transplanted people before their discharge from the hospital.

In collaboration with H. GENERAL de Castellón both the psychology and nutrition services periodically serve adolescents in the Transition Consultation service. This program consists of creating a bridge between the pediatric nephrologist and the adult nephrologist to facilitate the transition to the latter.
As a result of our experience, we have participated in the development of a transition protocol together with FEDEN Alcer, which you can download below.
